Simple

I stumbled into the most wonderful blog today: thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com This is supposed to be a permalink thingy but I am technologically challenged, have no idea how to insert a "permalink" so if it doesn't work right I apologize. It will have to do until I have DH help...he's the computer guru in our house, God love him. Yes, I was surfing at work..bad girl, I know. It sounded like fun so I thought I’d join in. Here is my first post to the daybook (drumroll please!)

FOR TODAY, New Year’s Eve...

Outside my window the sun is shining on the snowy mountains…so pretty.

I am thinking
about how much I will enjoy dinner and movies with my husband and son tonight

I am thankful for pretty much everything about my life, especially my family and friends.

From the kitchen
plates of burgers for the grill, which will give me the undivided attention of my dogs :0)

I am wearing old jeans (old, not holey), a long-sleeved shirt under a oversized zip-front hoodie and my Doc Marten boots.

I am creating chaos and mayhem in the office…my work here is done (JK)

I am going home for lunch to eat with my son…..yay!!

I am reading “For a Few Demons More” by Kim Harrison

I am hoping that all my friends and family have a great time tonight! Oh and that whatever little bug that is trying to pull a hostile takeover on me isn’t going to make me full-blown sick on New Years Eve.

I am hearing the radio on in my office.

Around the house are remnants of Christmas…sigh.

One of my favorite things is a nice long bubble bath with a good book…….aaaahhh.

A few plans for the rest of the week are to take down the tree, get my new phone set up, maybe go to a movie…

A picture thought I am sharing is that I REALLY need new running shoes!!!!

Have a fun-filled and SAFE New Year's Eve everyone!!!

Christmas

Post Christmas greetings!!! I hope you all had a wonderfully blessed Christmas and got spoiled rotten :0) Just a little update from last week:

Our Christmas was wonderful. Not enough time with family but it never is. Our oldest daughter and her hubby came down Tuesday night, so we had a late dinner and stayed up opening gifts and playing with stuff. They left Wednesday before noon so they could make their flight to Phoenix to spend Christmas with her mom. Meanwhile, our travel plans for Christmas Day got scrubbed due to the weather…supposed to have a BIG storm that day…so we checked the road reports, the radar, called family to check the weather there, only to arrive at the conclusion that it would be better to wait until Saturday to go visit. Waited for snow…played games….waited…watched a movie….waited…got a good laugh from me trying to snowboard on the Wii Fit (I so suck at that - LOL!!) ….nothing….then it rained…. RAINED! Ugh!!! (Come to find out that about ½ hour north of here it was snowing like a sonofagun all day) But then along 7-ish the wind kicked up pretty good and the temp dropped. We woke up to tons of snow on Friday. Shoveling was brutal….ouch. Went up to Saturday to my in-laws…opened gifts (Chris got a .22 from his grandpa…needless to say he’s one happy camper!) and visited. Ahhh….so nice to see everyone. Did I mention we “pug sat” while kids were gone to Phoenix? Yes, we got to take care of “Benny the Pug” while they were gone…cute little guy. Full of all kinds of silly noises. He snores :0) And into everything! It was like having a toddler in the house…can’t take your eyes off him for a second or he’s off snooping someplace. Our cats weren’t too broken up to see him go home last night though…they were not a fan of “Benny the Pug”. Go figure ;0) I hope to get around to dumping my camera tonight so I will have some pics to share.

Have a great day and a safe and happy New Year’s Eve!!!

Angels

I know I said I thought my previous post would most likely be the last one before Christmas, but I heard something today that I just have to share. You know how sometimes you can get caught up in your own problems, be they big or small…think that life is going poorly or is really stinking at the moment - you hate your job, your spouse is getting on your very last nerve, your car broke down, bounced a check, ect. Then some thing happens that will put life in perspective. Make you realize that whatever you think your problems may be are really pretty small potatoes compared to what others are dealing with. This is one of those enlightening moments.

I walked into an office at work this afternoon to find 2 coworkers in conversation. Needing to ask a question of one of them, I waited patiently for them to finish. They were talking about liver transplants. The lady – our company nurse - was speaking about a transplant that had taken place the end of October, that the insurance company refused to pay for the operation ect. Then it occurred to me that the person she was talking about who underwent the transplant was her son. He’s 30. Her 30 year old son just had a liver transplant. After I picked my jaw up off the ground, I asked her if she was indeed talking about her kid; she said yes and started the story over…telling us about how they had found out he was in dire need of a transplant, how they would drive to SLC after being put on the transplant list in hope of a liver becoming available, how they were about to leave one evening when the doctors came in to ask them to “hang out for a little while longer” then telling them a donor had been found. They operated the very next morning; the operation took well over 12 hours. And how while she was in the waiting room during this time that she received a phone call from a relative to tell her that her father had just passed away. Operation was a success; kid is doing wonderfully well. The insurance company refused to pay for the operation, sighting several reasons (one of which – and by far the most ridiculous, asinine thing I have ever heard - was that the mother and father were divorced), refuse to pay for the antirejection meds this kid will have to take every day for the rest of his life, but is paying for his physical therapy (huh??) In the last couple weeks, the woman has received word from the doctors that performed the operation that they were DONATING their services…no payment needed. This operation costs well over $450K, and the whole transplant team – all 14 (I think that was how many people she said?) are donating their time. In addition to that, the donor’s family paid whatever fee it is to get put on the transplant list (I had no idea you had to pay to get on this…I need to ask some questions about that) on top of donating their loved one’s liver.

Everything in my life that I was mad about or worried about has been reduced to the trivial things they are. They’re not life and death and in the grand scheme of things, they don’t matter. Hearing about acts of kindness and compassion like those extended to my coworker and her son really restores my faith in humanity. And reminds me that there are angels among us and there is a higher power that we all answer to who works miracles everyday in ways we never know.

Linus' Speech

Happy Friday to you!

After enduring a couple days where it has been colder than a snowman’s toe (it was -2 yesterday morning when I left for work, not including the wind chill), it is almost a heatwave this morning – a balmy 31 degrees out! Whoo hoo!!! The warmer temps are thanks to a big snowstorm that is moving in…round 2 of the snow is supposed to start here in a couple hours. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for us from 6 a.m. today thru 6 p.m. TOMORROW night. Hope Christopher feels like doing some shoveling :0) And I am not above bribery…I think a nice big Starbucks cappacino with a blueberry muffin would go a long way toward getting the driveway cleared out, don’t you??

I will be finishing up my wrapping tonight…figured I’d throw in my “Charlie Brown Christmas” dvd to watch while I’m cutting, taping and ribboning. This movie has the best speech in it…in fact it is my FAVORITE part of the entire movie. Linus gives this speech, taken from the scriptures, at the Christmas play rehersal, which has gotten a bit out of hand for it’s director Charlie Brown. Now, while I do not actively attend church of any kind, I certainly believe in the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit; I try to be a spiritual person and follow the “Big 10”, doing my best to be a moral and decent human being. Yeah, I fall short sometimes, not as good a person as I should be some days, but overall I think I’m doing okay. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do; it puts Christmas into the correct perspective…one that sadly so many lose sight of.

Linus’ Christmas Speech
"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flocks by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone ‘round about them, and they were so afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you this day is born in the City of Bethlehem, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; you shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 'Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men'. That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

This will probably be my last post before Christmas, so I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a new year full of love, happiness and peace.

The Driving Gap

Like most people, I try to keep the “3 second gap” between my car and the car in front of me (my Driver’s Ed teacher would be proud). Especially when the roads are slick or the weather is bad. Other people, however, seem to take this as a sign for them to come on over into the aforementioned space. It obviously does not bother these folks that they are now so close to the vehicle in front of them that if the guy in front sneezes, it’s taking all 3 of us out. Call me crazy but I kind of like my car “as is”…I want to keep it out of the body shop. Not that my body shop doesn’t do awesome work; it’s just that the secretary knows me as soon as I walk in. In my defense, neither of the 2 prior wrecks were my fault. No, really…I was hit by an old guy who blew a stop sign (he wasn’t going very fast, thank goodness!) and the other dude evidentally took offense at being beeped at when he nearly sat thru a green light and backed up onto the hood of my car. But I digress. Last night as I came into town for a few groceries I was “gapping” as the roads were looking a little on the slick side, and it was lightly snowing. Of course, traffic was heavy as it was a) rush hour, and 2) Christmas. I had other drivers move over in front of me several times. I consider this a violation of my territorial bubble for which you should be flogged, and just a completely asinine thing to do besides. You wanna wreck yourself, be my guest…knock yourself out (no pun intended); just do it when there aren’t throngs of people on the road that can end up on the back of a tow truck with you.

In the news this morning I heard that Drew Peterson is engaged to be married to wife #5. You all remember Drew Peterson…..he’s the cop in Illinois whose fourth wife disappeared and his third wife was found dead in the bathtub (originally an accidental drowning but was changed to a murder after the body was re-examined when wife 5 turned up missing). I find this little snippet of news very disturbing and sick. What kind of silly twit would think about even dating – let alone marrying - this slime?! How could you look at this guy and not just want to spit in his face?! In all probability he murdered 2 of his 4 wives!!! Future Mrs Peterson #5 is reportedly 23 (same age as wife #4) and lives just a short distance away from the Peterson home. This whole situation just makes me sick. I hear that Lacey Peterson’s husband and the Menendez brothers also have women wanting to marry them….disgusting….what is wrong with people these days? Yeesh.

Okay…I’m done with the negativity, on with the cheery. Loving the snow on the ground. I feels so much more like Christmas time with all of it. I honestly don’t know if I could spend Christmas as an adult in a warm climate (sorry, Hawaii but I would have to leave you for snowy weather for a month or so). It would just be wrong on so many levels!! Christmas is getting so close and I’m feeling a little giddy. Can’t wait to spend some festive holiday time with the fam. Looking forward to spending Christmas eve watching movies and playing games with my DH and darling son, to spending Christmas day with my awesome FIL, then spending Christmas night with my MIL. Too cool :0) Got cookies to bake over the weekend…I’m sure Chris will volunteer to be my official “taster” to ensure me that they pass muster before giving out…such a good son ;0)

Enjoy your day!!!

Let the Shoveling Begin!

On Saturday, Mother Nature really let ‘er rip, I’ll tell you….we had a foot of snow (dogs were up to their bellys in snow while romping in the back yard, so that’s around a foot, easy…give or take) dumped on us between, oh I’d say 5:30 am and 11 am. Took about 45 minutes to shovel (that's not me in the pic...just one I found on the 'net) the drive…after the plow come by to fill in the end of it. Thanks to a sweet neighbor and his snowblower, I didn’t have to move all the snow the plow left… yay!!! My shoulders are hating life…they’re reallllllly tender….under my arms, between the shoulder blades. Ouch. I forgot how much work it is to throw that stuff. Even if it’s the light fluffy stuff. I also forgot how much fun my dogs have in the snow. They get just soooo excited to go out to play in the snow – it’s the cutest thing. Trixie has to stuff her face into any hole in the snow she sees (could be a mouse in there! Oh boy!!) so she ends up with snow all over her face and caked on the end of her nose. Moe just runs around like an idot…if the snow is very deep, he’ll hop like a dang kangaroo across the yard. Oh and catching snowballs is his favorite :0) He just can’t figure out where they go when they hit the ground though. It’s quite the mystery. Silly pooch. Doggies will be happy…more snow is on the way tonight. And tomorrow. And the next day. ((sigh)) C’est la vie, cheries.

Have a great day and remember to be kind….you never know who will really need it today.

Snow's a comin'

Oh boy! What a crazy week it has been. Outside of work I have been a busy little elf, trying to get all my Christmas tasks wrapped up…tree put up (slow getting that done this year, felt like such a Grinch!), cards, wrapping, dropping off Angel Tree gifts, picking up small gifts for 2 of my son’s friends who’s birthdays it is over the weekend (he’s got parties tonight and tomorrow to go to) and I do believe – with a little good luck and flash of inspiration – I will be DONE with my shopping tonight. Let’s have a round of applause for that, folks! (Thank you, thank you…oh no, you’re too kind…really) And it seems that I will be finishing up just in time for a big ol’ snow storm to roar into the valley late tonight. It’s supposed to stick around until Sunday…hope we don’t get buried…ick. I was kina hoping to drive down to SLC and see the lights in Temple Square this weekend but the impeding storm has put the kibash on that idea…nuts. Maybe next weekend. We haven’t been to see them since the kids were little teeny.

Hope you all had a wonderful week and I wish you a fantastic weekend!

A Letter in the Sun

This has long been my favorite story at Christmas time. (Well, aside from THE story, which is why we celebrate Christmas in the first place.) It also happens to be the most reprinted newspaper editorial in history. The story of a little 8 year-old girl named Virginia O'Hanlon who wrote to the New York Sun in the fall of 1897, searching for the answer to the age-old question every kid asks sooner or later: is there a Santa Claus? This speaks to me more now than ever as my family is blessed enough to have the opportunity to provide gifts for a child from the Angel Tree. Santa exists forever in our hearts and in the kindness, the generousity of ourselves toward others, be they family or stranger. The letter she wrote and it's response, published in the Sun September 21, 1897....

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

C and H 4

It's Friday!!! Woo hoo! :0)

Christmas shopped last night. Picked up things for my DH and some more stuff for our Angel Tree kid. AND....I bought....."Alvin and the Chipmunk Christmas" dvd! I haven't seen this since I was probably about 10. Yeah, I got funny looks in Borders when I was squealing with joy after spying this on the shelf. I get excited about things I loved from my childhood, okay? Sue me. Give me a Care Bear or a Cherry and Vanilla Ironport and I'll hop around like a 4 year old. Just because I am getting older doesn't mean I have to act my age...at least not all the time ;0)

Last Calvin for the week! Have a great weekend!

C and H 3

Ah, NOW it feels like Christmas. It snowed about 1/2" last night so everything was beautifully white this morning. Of course, it's all melted now, but at least we got a taste of the white stuff - woo hoo! Did a smidge of Christmas shopping last night, picked out a child from the Angel Tree to shop for...love doing that :0) We may not be rolling in dough, but we are fortunate enough to be able to give some happiness at Christmastime to a child in need.

On with the Calvin and Hobbes....still on the snow theme.....

Have a great day, y'all!!

C and H 2

No snow. The weatherman was wrong.....again. Go figure. Kind of hoping for some snow soon so it will start feeling more like Christmas. Not that I want to shovel, mind you. This Calvin and Hobbes strip is totally something I would do/have done to my BF Aundria...BEFORE she had the opportunity to do it to me...and she would in a New York minute too! ;0) Enjoy.

C and H

One of the best ever comic strips, bar none, was Calvin and Hobbes. It ranks up there with Bloom County, Peanuts and Zits for me...loved that comic. I thought it would be good to revisit some of their strips. So, since it is supposed to snow tonight, I figured I'd start with a snow related one. Enjoy!

Dog Tired

Wow…December 1st….doesn’t seem like it should be December already. Where did November go? Yeesh!

I am sooo dang tired! It would take 2 of me to be any more tired (lol). Yeah, the dog napping on the couch here is very appropriate today...wish it was me!! This morning was registration for the winter quarter. And I am officially “registered” for class. It took getting up at 4a.m. (ugh!) so I could be at the school by 5a.m. (oh yes, I said 5 in the a.m.) to stand in line to get in to the class I wanted, but by jingle I did it. Sounds completely nuts, doesn’t it. That’s what I thought as well when a friend told me (after I missed out on registration for last quarter) that I’d need to be at the school by 5 to wait in line. Nonsense…ridiculous…that’s just silly. Hah! When I arrived at the school at the crack of 5, I was flabberghasted to find that I was the 4th person in line!!! (good crikey!!) So I stood in line with my big cuppa coffee I grabbed on the way in to town, iPod on, in the cold, trying to keep warm, until the janitor (bless his heart) took pity on the 8 or 9 of us in line at 5:50 and let us into the school to wait….ahhh, warmth! :0) By the time they opened the door to the registrants office at 7:30 I was more than ready to get done and go to work. Standing/sitting in one spot not doing anything for that long on significantly less sleep than one is accustomed without dozing off is TOUGH!

I don’t know if I mentioned that Chantelle and James brought their “kid”, Benny the Pug (pictured above with Chris), with them over Thanksgiving. He had been having some health issues for a few days which made them not want to leave him home by himself overnight, so they loaded him up in his crate and brought him. He’s such a cute little guy…especially in one of his “hoodies” :0) Cracks me up. He stayed in the laundry room (where he managed to hop on top of the washing machine until James took the crate out of there) so that he wouldn’t get tangled up with one of our cats. He was a good boy, got to go for walks, and had lots of belly scratches. He snores! How cute is that?! I’m sure my house has not seen the last of Benny the Pug.

Have a great Monday!!!

Black Friday

So here we are, the “day after”…Black Friday. Did we all survive dinner yesterday without downing some Pepto or popping a button on our britches?? Ugh…I’m still full from yesterday; I did not pig out, but that slice of Death By Chocolate cake for dessert was extremely rich and filling. Dinner was sooo good at my house. And I’m not just saying that because I cooked. Everything turned out wonderful so I am heap big happy about that :0) I don’t have quite as much leftovers as I had figured, but enough to munch on some stuffing, sweet ‘taters and a turkey sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

Speaking of Black Friday, I can not count the number of times this week that I was asked if I was going shopping today. The answer to that is a resounding NOT ON YOUR LIFE, JACK. There is nothing I need that bad to justify standing outside of _____________ store (pick one) at a barely civilized hour to stand in line with 5 bazillion crazed people…outside in the dark and cold to wait for the store to open so I can save a few bucks. Seriously people! Several friends do this ever year and I think they have lost their ever-loving minds. I would much rather get a big ol’ cuppa joe, a muffin or 2, find a good place to sit and just watch all the hysteria unfold. WAAAY more entertaining :0) It’s sort of like going to a bar…it’s lots more fun to watch the drunk(s) than be the drunk.

Enjoy your leftovers and have a great day!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

“The unthankful heart discovers no mercies; but the thankful heart will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings."
-- Henry Ward Beecher

(I love that quote)

Ah, Thanksgiving. A wonderful day of family, friends and good food; a day to reflect about the birth of our country - the hardships faced by the brave souls who sailed across an ocean to find a place to call their own, to be without religious persecution; the many sacrifices of our forefathers who rose up in the face of the King of England to declare us a nation free of British rule, who fought to secure the rights which were endowed upon us by God; all those who have given of themselves to ensure we remain the land of the free, home of the brave. All of the above, I am exceedingly thankful for. I am thankful for the love of a good man, my darling husband, who would “swim through shark-infested water to bring me a glass of lemonade”; I am thankful for a son who has a heart bigger than Texas, who makes me laugh at least once a day; I am thankful for my oldest daughter, who lets me be part of her life and who I could learn volumes from on how to be happy each and every day; I am thankful for my son-in-law, who loves my daughter deeply and is just a great kid; I am thankful for my youngest daughter, who is able to light up any room with her smile and laughter; I am thankful for my in-laws for welcoming me into their families, for the time they share with us, and for their love. I am thankful for my extraordinary friends for all they share of themselves…their strength, compassion, courage, time and love is heartfelt and much appreciated.

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Vamping

Busybusybusy...busy finishing tidying up the house, busy with work....oh and budget rears it's ugly head again...knew that was coming. Ick.

“Twilight” opened last week, much to the rejoicement of teenage girls (and big girls too) everywhere. For those who don’t know, “Twilight” is the first book in a series of vampire novels written by a lady who could possibly be the next JK Rowling. The buzz about these books has been huge, to say the least…borders on mania. I feel like I am about the last person on the planet to read any of these; I hear ”you haven’t read those?! You gotta read those books!” a lot. I finally broke down and bought “Twilight” over the summer. I’m almost finished (I got side-tracked with several other books along the way, thanks to regular trips to the library). Not quite sure I get what all the hub-bub is about. Don’t get me wrong….it’s been an okay book; but it’s hasn’t sucked me in like Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles did…I could not put those books down! “Twilight”? Not so much. I’ll probably end up reading the next one, just to give it a fair shot. Could be by the time I finish this one I am hooked, who knows.

On another vampire note, “True Blood” wrapped up its first season this past Sunday. I’m bummed. Don’t wanna wait until summer for it to start back up. I don’t know if I mentioned before that this show is based on (yet another) series of vampire books. I think I will pick up the first one…with luck it will be at least as good as the series. Something to help me through my Sookie Stackhouse withdrawls ;0)

Went out for coffee and some browsing last night with my DF, Rose. Had a wonderful time. I always enjoy getting together with her…she’s such an awesome lady. Gabbed over coffee and dessert until our waiter all but dragged us to the door (lol), then wandered over to Bed Bath and Beyond and perused their aisles (sooo much cute stuff!) We don’t get together nearly as much as we should. Got to hear about her grandbabies, all the cute things they are doing; how the girls and their hubbys are doing; work, books, old TV shows (we’re talking “I Love Lucy” and the “Dick Van Dyke Show” kind of old shows), music…all the good stuff that friends yak about together. We’ve been friends for about 9 years, our youngest daughters were buds, our husbands play in the band together; we know so much about each other’s lives and families. She is a great friend and I am very blessed to have her in my life.

Seize the day!

Tom Turkey is Coming!

What’s up ya’ll?? Everyone ready for the big feast? I think I’ve got it under control…aside from a couple things I need to grab today in the way of groceries. I was sort of hoping for the beautiful weather we’ve had to carry over into Thursday so we could maybe go over to the park and play some football but alas, it is not to be. I’ll settle for decent weather for my DIL, oldest and her hubby to drive down in.

So here we are back at Monday. Kind of like “lather, rinse, repeat”, isn’t it? (lol) Had a good but busy weekend. Spent most of it cleaning…sacrificed 2 nails to Mr Clean…argh. But I scrubbed EVERYTHING in sight..all the walls, the floors, even the dogs! Yes, not even the pooches could escape the cleaning frenzy. Needed to do the “big clean” before winter…its been put off long enough. Just carpet shampooing left and I am done :0)

Kinda short today...got a late start writing this, just flat ran out of time. Have a great day!

It's Over

And we have a winner!…..the union. My facility voted yesterday on whether or not to unionize…and it passed overwhelmingly. My company – well, my particular facility has been in business for nearly 80 years. It was owned by the same family until about, oh I’d say 3 years ago, when they sold controlling interest to a large national corporation, who in turn sold us to an even larger international corporation. And until this last company bought us, we have pretty much been one big happy family…was everything perfect and peachy-keen? No, of course not. There were problems here and there with various things, but they always were resolved in-house. Our management team has always gone out of their way to try everything they could to keep us “fat and sassy”, if you will. Now because of the way the international company has done things since they took us over, people are upset. They haven’t given management a sporting chance at trying to fix the things they could, and not realized that some of the changes made are irreversible. I will admit, the new kids on the block took some perks from us - like the perfect attendace award (a big chunk of moolah), our employee golf tournament – and fired a bunch of people right out of the gate, neither of which exactly endeared them to our employees. None of those things will be reinstated just because we are now a union plant. As for the big “raises” the union pushers told everyone we’d get…not going to happen. If the company wanted to give us raises, they’d do it already. Our insurance costs are going to increase dramatically. The supervisors no longer will have the ability to work with an employee who, for example, is late due to bad weather or needs to trade a regularly scheduled day off for a non-work day….they will have to go strictly by the rule book. All the good things we can do and have done here will be negated by the union coming in. It stinks, I hate it and I am beyond upset about becoming a union plant. Unions reward bad behavior and punish the good. It goes against everything this country was founded on, believes in and stands for. Once upon a time, unions were a good thing; that day has long passed.

Bond, Budget and Pushers

Greetings and salutations from sunny Jamaica! Yeah, don’t I wish (LOL). Sitting on a beach, enjoying the sun, listening to the sound of the waves rolling up on shore, watching the surfers, with a nice big glass of iced tea sounds soooo heavenly right now!

It’s been hectic this past 5 or 6 days…weekend was good however. Swim team had a big ol’ meet all day Saturday. I volunteered to help with the team lunch, feeding not only our guys and gals, but all the officials and the other coaches. We fed over 100 people! Whew! Our kids took first place; the Guppy took 1st and 4th in his 2 events…so proud :0) He shaved a couple tenths off his best time for the 100 free - way to go!! My DH and I went to the new James Bond movie at the early matinee Sunday. I know the critics have been trashing it, calling it the “Bond Ultimatum” or whatever, but after viewing the movie….I don’t think we watched the same film! I have no clue what movie they watched, but it wasn’t “Quantum of Solace”. It was action packed, good story, interesting new characters; I don’t get what was not to like, but okay…whatever. A word of advice: the action starts immediately…hold on to your hats! Oh and had a great preview of the new “Fast and the Furious”….yeah, baby!!! Two words….Vin Diesel :0) It’s got all the original cast members, the preview looked awesome!!! Can not wait to see it!!!

Work, however, has not been full of shiney happy people as of late. The department heads have been working on next year’s budget since last Tuesday. Certainly a task I do not envy. Mostly because we’ve gotta have it done by Wednesday! (Yeah, those lovely persons at HQ gave us 8 whole days to do our entire budget for next year. Generous of them, wasn’t it) My poor boss is about fit to be tied. And after doing budget for our office for my boss, I sympathize even more….ugh. By the time I finished compiling the data I was responsible for (6 months worth) to give to my boss I had so many figures in my head I think my pupils turned into dollar signs! If I never have to look at another piece of “greenbar” paper again it will be entirely too soon. And that would be tomorrow. I have to go over our costs for last week for my weekly Wednesday report. Ick. But for all my grousing, I am very pleased that I am trusted enough to help with my department’s budget. Kind of a big deal…at least to me. And then there's the union stuff....one of the labor unions is trying to unionize our facility (we are the only one in our company's US division that is not). This started about...oh, I'd say 4 months ago. And has gotten ugly to the point where one of the "pushers" in our facility has been threatening other employees if they did not vote for the union. The union has brought a flock of thugs up from Texas who have created traffic jams handing out flyers at the end of the work days, show up at our employee's doors, call them on the phone. They lie like rugs...how can you tell they're lying?? Their lips are moving. These "pushers" have promised our people pretty much everything under the sun (you know, like our politicians do) and yet my company has to play by the rules and are restricted in what they can say and do in their efforts to keep the union out. It's rediculous. Vote is tomorrow...we've got the goverment NLRA folks here to conduct it and to escort our employees up to vote so there is no intimidation on the way to the polling booth. Kind of late for that one but better late than never, right? Should be interesting. I will be glad when it is over. Just so it will be over and things can get back to...well, normal, or whatever the new "normal" will be if they get in.

Hope your week is off to a rip roarin’ great start! Enjoy your day!

Thank You Veterans

First off, let me say a big huge "thank you" to all the veterans and soldiers who have and are currently serving our great country. We all owe you such a tremendous debit of gratitude that words just can't express. So thank you and God bless.

Must be something in the water today…everyone here at work is CRAN-KY!! I know wherefrom my crankiness springs – I found out about 6 this morning that my dear son (bless his little pea brain) left his TEAM SUIT in the hotel the team stayed at over the weekend for their meet. He managed to bring back everything he took except for the one thing he could not leave. Yes, I called the hotel. Their head housekeeper is off today and tomorrow, so they will have to wait for the manager to come in (God only knows when that will be), find a few minutes in his/her schedule to go to where ever it is they keep the stuff left in the rooms and look for his suit. Then they will call me and let me know. Late this afternoon. Or this evening. Or sometime tomorrow. IF they have the suit, they will fax me a form to fill out with card info so they can then ship it to us. If they DON’T have it, I may lose my freaking mind. You see, he has a competition on Saturday. If the hotel does not have his suit, I then have to fork out yet another $60 for a replacement suit, which of course the local swim shop have in stock in every size BUT his and will have to order. That will take a week to get here. ((SIGH)) It’s always something……

Gotta give a big “ATTA GIRL!!” to my friend, Darla…she has worked very hard at breaking thru the plateau she’s been at for the last few months and finally busted on thru that bad boy!!! (I see a great new pair of cute little Gap jeans in her very near future!) And anyone who has tried to lose weight and just could not seem to get the scale to go anywhere after a certain point knows how stinking hard it is to break a weight plateau. Brutal. So kudos to her!!!

Trying to get my ducks in a row for Thanksgiving dinner. I think I have the “menu” all mapped out, but I am waffling on whether or not I’m overdoing it. I want to make sure that there is plenty of everything, but not so much left over that I can’t get the refrigerator door shut. There will be 6 of us total (4 guys and 2 gals) and I’ve got 2 breads (white and whole wheat), mashed and sweet ‘taters, salad, corn, stuffing, turkey, chocolate cream pie (won’t last an hour after dinner), pumpkin pie and an apple pie. Wow. May be a bit too much….I had planned on sending a big thing of leftovers home with my DIL so he can munch afterward, but that still may leave more food than I want to deal with. Hmm. Have to give it a good think…..

Have a great day......hug a soldier!!!

Wanderings.....

I have just one word for you: Moochie’s. Moooochie’s…mmm-mm! Saturday my DH and I headed out to have lunch at a little hole-in-the-wall “Ma and Pa” deli called Moochie’s. We had seen this place on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” about a month ago and after watching them make their signature mouthwatering authentic (the lady who owns the joint is a Philadelphia native) Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches, along with killer meatball subs, it was agreed that we would indeed have to sample their wares. We had actually been planning to go on this particular weekend while my son was away at a swim meet in order to kill 2 birds with one stone – lunch and some Christmas shopping. So off we went. I had been super good on my diet the last week or 2 just so I could splurge on a Moochie’s…really clamped down on the ol’ calories, exercised joyfully. I am here to tell you that it was worth every stinking calorie I forfeited, every droplet of sweat. One of the best sandwiches…really. Together with a small side of macaroni salad (not your everyday mac salad, either) and very small bread pudding that was to die for, I conclude that I am exceedingly grateful that Moochie’s is not local. Otherwise the temptation to have a cheesesteak would be just too much. Everything is made fresh daily, made to order. They do a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, along with several entrees like lasagna, chicken cacciatore, and eggplant parmigiana (which you can get to take home and bake later) and several yummy salads. I will warn you now about the huge 3-layer chocolate cake sitting in a glass dome on the counter… it comes by the slice and looks sinful enough you’d have to go to confession after eating it :0) Anyway, enough about Moochie’s. We then wandered around several places in search of inspiration for Christmas gifts for friends and family. We had a few flashes of brilliance, leading to a couple purchases. There was a kiosk in one mall that was just games and puzzles. There I found some gift ideas…one of which were these nifty mystery puzzles. Each puzzle comes with a story which you read, then you put together a large puzzle that holds clues to solving the “crime”. Unique concept, looked like fun; think I may get one for someone I know (no names…he or she may be reading this!). Dillard’s was having a massive sale. Certainly one of those times I wish I had a ton of $$$...I saw oodles of things I liked, both as gifts for others and for myself. They had a china setting that was gorgeous, not to mention some Waterford crystal stemware that was awesome. ((sigh))

Watched a good movie Friday night called “Shooter” with Mark Walhberg. TONS of suspense, great plot and of course, Marky Mark sans his Funky Bunch (for those children of the 80’s who remember his brief singing career). He has turned out to be a decent actor. I have liked him in everything I have seen him in…he has been good even if the movie wasn’t. I also got around to watching the last 007 movie, “Casino Royale”. I have long been resistant to watching this film. Not gonna watch it and you can’t make me. I don’t particularly care for Daniel Craig, the guy who is the new Bond. But. The movie was good. Better than I was expecting. HE was better than I expected. Liked the storyline a lot. Had some good one-liners (the bit in the casino about “that last hand nearly killed me” was a riot!) Made me anxious to see the new one that starts on Friday!!

Hope everyone enjoyed a nice weekend and are having a good start to the week. Keep smiling :0)

Feeding the Fish

Why do people ask stupid questions? Why, why, WHY?! I’ll give you an example that just happened. Man walks into my office…looks in my boss’ office…no boss. He turns and looks at me and says, “Not in here, huh?” I look this person in the eye and reply, “No, he is out in the plant someplace.” The guy says, “He’s just not in the office then.” Unless my boss is hiding under his desk or behind my coat on the coat rack, NO!! He’s not in here!!! What part about no one sitting at the desk and my telling you he is in the plant threw you off there, big guy?? Seriously!!! Fire up a brain cell – I know there must be one in there that’s functional - and think. That whole shpeal that Bill Engvall does about “here’s your sign” is just sooo right on the money. People say just the most God-awful stupid things! And I can complain about this because I know I am one of these people from time to time…I’ve certainly had my share of “DOH!!” moments where the words were out of my mouth before my brain could stop them. I just have a low tolerance for stupidity (especially mine!)

Have y’all heard about the monster blizzard that has hit the Dakotas and parts thereabout? Holy snowballs, Batman!!!! Some places got 49” of snow in the last day or so. That’s just over 4 FEET of snow!!! And they’re expecting more today!! Good grief!!!! I can’t imagine…..and I’m thankful it’s not ME shoveling all that. Yet. We get our turn for snow next week. Monday. At least that’s what the weather guys are saying, and we all know how accurate they are.

The guppy is on his way with the swim team to a big meet several hours south of here. He’s super excited about the trip and should do very well in his events. I’m not sure if he’s more excited about missing a day of school or the actual meet ;0) I probably packed him enough food for the bus ride down and snacks for the next 24 hours to feed a small armada…can’t help it….overzealous mom mode kicked in. I just want to make sure he has plenty of fuel (not junk food!) to keep him going inbetween meals and events since he’s not traveling with us and we don’t have a lot of access to him during the meet. Anyone with a teenage boy knows they eat like a horse anyway…throw in the intense physical activity on top of that and you’ve got a ravenous kid on your hands. My job as a swim mom is to make sure my guppy is properly nutriented so he can kick some swimming butt! :0)

You all have a great weekend and I’ll see ya on the flipside :0)

Get out there!

It's short and sweet today...I just have one thing to say:

GO VOTE!!!!

Monday, November 3, 2008

((sigh))

Can you believe it's NOVEMBER?!? Jeez, where did October go? Just a quick post to say I'm still alive...somewhere....planning Thanksgiving dinner....contemplating paint colors (yes, the kitchen/dining room)....so bear with me. Since my company cracked down last week on the 'net usage and emails, I haven't had time to get on the computer at home. I usually post at work while waiting for reports to print so that really threw me a curveball. Anyway, bear with me until I can get a new groove going with the home computer.

Enjoy your day!!

Hidey-ho neighbors! Nothing much to report today so I thought I'd post a few "treats" so we could all have a good giggle :0) Enjoy!!!

Body World

Okay. So I went to see the Body Worlds 3 exhibit over the weekend with my good friend Rose, my oldest kiddo and my son-in-law. I had heard about this last year when said oldest child went to Phoenix to visit her mom…one of the shows was there (they’ve got 4 or 5 of them now, each with a different theme) so she went with her mom, step-dad, little brother and sister. Also, my Anatomy and Physiology professor talked about it in class…he’d been to one in Seattle. Suggested we go if we had the chance to see one. Our exhibit opened on the 19th of September in SLC and it is the 3rd show with the theme of the heart. This is not an exhibit for everyone. It’s extremely graphic…you can’t show the details about your body and how it works with out being that frank. You know what I’m saying? Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. That being said, it was the singularly most interesting and amazing thing I have ever seen. I’m not kidding. I have carpet burns on the bottom of my chin from it dragging the floor for 3+ hours (LOL). The bodies are posed in different ways in which show how everything moves and works together in motion. They’re actually quite beautiful in their own kind of macabre way. There is lots more to discuss but I don’t want to make any of you who don’t get into things like anatomy revisit your lunches, so I’ll stop here. If you are interested in the exhibit, visit theleonardo.org to find out more and how to get tix to the SLC show.

In other developments, Chris had his first HS swim meet Saturday. He competed in 3 events – 2 individual races and a relay – and he WON his 100m freestyle race!!! He not only won, he shaved 23 seconds off his best time for that event. Yes, I could have the next Michael Phelps living in my house as we speak ;0) The relay…well, he kicked butt and was the lead-off man, the last kid hauled too, but the 2 kids in the middle…not so much. They finished 3rd in that one. His other individual race was the 100 backstroke and he did good – 4th – but was racing bigger kids. He’ll get ‘em next time. Overall the boys team took first place and the girls team finished 2nd….not a bad start to the year!

Hope you all enjoyed the fine fall weather and are having a good day so far.

A Smattering

Been feeling kinda icky the last 2 days so there's nothing really exciting to report. In that case, I will share a couple pictures I've taken in the last 2 weeks, so we're not all completely bored by this post (LOL)....a small herd of longhorns has cropped up about 1/8 of a mile from work...not something you see alot of around here. I like the longhorns; if I was to ever raise cattle, that's the kind I'd have. They've got attitudes :0) Got a new cat trying really hard to adopt us...it lives across the street at the Checketts. Not sure why they got another cat; the last ones they had - Siamese brother and sister - they didn't pay attention to and we ended up with the sister (Daisy) after the brother was hit by a car and killed. This one is named Jasper...lovable little thing...purrs like mad and is cute as heck. Hazy sunrise in the valley last Thursday, taken on the way to the dentist. I love how you can tell where the river is by the line of fog coming up from it. The pic really doesn't do the scene justice....it was alot prettier in person. And the Brady Chapel in the cemetery in Poky....I've always wanted to stop to look at it, read the sign. For years I thought it was a mausoleum but it's not. It is quite a nifty little structure...I like the architecture. I'd LOVE to be able to see the stained glass windows from inside with the sunlight coming thru them; I bet they're gorgeous.

Chany and James are coming tonight...excited to see them. We're all going to watch Chris swim in the morning, then the 3 of us (Chany, James and I) are going to see the Body Wold exhibit, along with my friend, Rose. Looking forward to going!

That's it for me today. Tonight is the Emotion Bowl so GO GRIZZ! Beat those Tigers!!!!

You all have a great weekend!!

Bunt Cakes and Braces

Finally able to get back to the blog and update! I was kidnapped over the weekend by drag queens driving a pink ’62 Caddy and forced to bake bunt cakes while watching “Caberet” and “Arthur”. Just kidding ;0) Nothing quite so flamboyant...just busy.

Let’s see…Saturday we spent the afternoon and most of the evening visiting with one of my DH’s friends since grade school, Lynn, and his kids. They came up and stayed most of the afternoon and evening. One of his boys is learning how to play the guitar, so he brought his “axe” and Steve spent some time teaching him scales and a song. We all had a nice time…looking forward to the next time we can get together.

The kidlet got his braces on yesterday. He is a miserable little camper today…his poor mouth is extremely sore. I can sympathize…had braces for 2 years in HS. He picked blue and orange bracket bands…team colors (go ‘stangs!) …I tried to talk him into glow-in-the-dark ones, but he wanted to do school colors. He has his first HS competition this weekend and I am so excited for him! The team did a "pre-meet" Saturday morning so the new kids could see how a real meet is run...my boy swam 3 events...one solo race, one relay and the 500 freestyle....that's like 20 laps...I was exhausted just watching that one!

And that’s about it for us right now. Hope all is well with everyone….have a great day!

I Love You, Mr Bubble!

Tough day at work. I know that lots of people have jobs where they have co-workers to pick up the slack if you take a day off. I do not have that luxury ((sigh)). I am my office...it's just little ol' me to run the day to day stuff...the filing, the reports, the data entry and orders. My stuff just piles up until I return. After just 1 day, the top of my desk is buried under a rediculously large mound of papers...I think if I stacked it on the floor I could jump into it like a pile of leaves. At the moment I'm thinking if I get any more paperwork brought to me the tempation to throw it all in the garbage can, grab a Bic from one of the guys and toast marshmallows would just be too great. It's a good thing I need to run to the store after work...I'm out of Mr Bubble (gasp!!) Mr Bubble is my buddy...we spend lots of time together in the evenings...especially durning the winter. Long baths with Mr Bubble and a good book or some tunes helps preserve my sanity. They used to make a lavender-scented Bedtime Mr Bubble before the whole world became crazed with all things lavender...it kicked butt for winding down after a long day. Sadly they discontinued it. But I can manage without the fancy lavender smell. I am anxiously counting the minutes until I can grab my book, fill the tub and spend some good quality time with the guy I've loved since childhood...Mr Bubble.

Autumn Treat

Each fall it happens. The undeniable urge to have them. I want…I need…I yearn…for apples. Ambrosia. Pacific Rose. Honeycrisp. Pink Lady. Granny Smith. Braeburn. This is my favorite time of year for eating apples. Fall brings a whole new crop of bodaciously yummy apple varieties. True, Granny Smiths are available year round, but October is harvest time…right now my local grocery store is carrying Grannys that are softball sized globes of delicious green tartness…I picked up a bunch last night, along with some of my other all-time favorite autumn apple, Honeycrisp. Oh, the juicy sweetness of those little suckers is well worth the months of waiting for them to return to the produce section. So good. I enjoy eating the Grannys for breakfast or as a snack with some peanut butter…the Pink Ladys are great sliced up with some sharp cheddar and some crackers; throw some cored Braeburns in the oven stuffed with raisens, chopped walnuts and a little cinnamon to bake for a warm treat. If you have never tried some of the varieties I’ve mentioned, please look for them at your store and purchase a couple to taste. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Notes

Ah, the first snowstorm of the season. We got lucky on the snow accumulation….pretty much nothing but a light dusting. It just wasn’t cold enough for it to stick. And the fact that most of the storms split when they reach our valley, taveling either east or west of us, played into that lack of snow someplace I’m sure.

Looking for pumpkins this week …getting some ideas of what to carve. I’ve seen some real, cute ideas from that company who puts out the pattern books every year (their name escapes me at the moment). I’m not as artistic as my better half so I have to resort to patterns. What I see in my head isn’t what I end up with…I cut out what I should leave and vice versa. Oops.

Had word last night from our good friend Doctor Picker in St Louis that he and his son will be coming out here around Christmas to visit with us and other friends. We haven’t seen them in about 3 years so this will be a wonderful treat.

I’ve been listening to a lot of classical music the last few days (thanks in large part to a fab co-worker who was kind enough to add his mps’s to the few pieces I already had), which I enjoy tremendously when I’m in the right mood. As I listened, a thought occurred to me…how in the world did Beethoven write such beautiful music after he had lost his hearing?? Being able to hear until his 20s (if memory serves), could he still “hear “ the notes in his mind as he wrote? How could he know what his finished works sounded like when played, or if they were played correctly?? It just boggles my mind to think about. Absolutely amazes me.

Enjoy your day!!

Flakey

I think I just went into cardiac arrest. I looked at the forecast for this weekend and saw that it is supposed to SNOW. Snow….that is a swear word in my world. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a total grinch when it comes to snow…I love snow just as much as the next guy. Snow is great!….in the mountains, where I don’t have to shovel it. It is not so appealing in my driveway. ((Sigh)) I am sooooo not ready for winter. I want fall until 2 days before Christmas, then snow a bunch, then melt again 2 days after Christmas. Last year we had snow piled so high I couldn’t throw the snow high enough to land on them! The dang snowpiles were taller than me! But the worst thing was backing out of the drive…I couldn’t see over the piles so I was always afraid some car, or worse – a kid, would be in the road. Even though I was diligent about surveying the street before getting into the car, you never know who or what can come down the road while you’re getting belted in and beginning to back out. Scary. So with a little luck, we won’t get but a skiff. Good weekend to make some comfort food :0) Like the following beef stew recepie (please note that this needs to refrigerate overnight before cooking) that I got from Paula Deen’s show on the Food Network…enjoy!!

Parker's Beef Stew

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 24 hours
Cook Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
Yield: 6 servings

2 1/2 pounds good quality chuck beef, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes
1 (750-ml bottle) good red wine
2 whole garlic cloves, smashed
3 bay leaves
2 cups all-purpose flour
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Good olive oil
2 yellow onions, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 pound carrots, peeled and cut diagonally in 1 1/2-inch chunks
1/2 pound white mushrooms, stems discarded and cut in 1/2
1 pound small potatoes, halved or quartered
1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
2 cups or 1 (14 1/2-ounce can) chicken stock or broth
1 large (or 2 small) branch fresh rosemary
1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 (10-ounce) package frozen peas

Place the beef in a bowl with red wine, garlic, and bay leaves. Place in the refrigerator and marinate overnight.

The next day, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
Combine the flour, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 tablespoon pepper. Lift the beef out of the marinade with a slotted spoon and discard the bay leaves and garlic, saving the marinade. In batches, dredge the cubes of beef in the flour mixture and then shake off the excess. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot and brown half the beef over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, turning to brown evenly. Place the beef in a large oven-proof Dutch oven and continue to brown the remaining beef, adding oil as necessary. (If the beef is very lean, you'll need more oil.) Place all the beef in the Dutch oven.

Heat another 2 tablespoons of oil to the large pot and add the onions, carrots, mushrooms, and potatoes. Cook for 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic and cook for 2 more minutes. Place all the vegetables in the Dutch oven over the beef. Add 2 1/2 cups of the reserved marinade to the empty pot and cook over high heat to deglaze the bottom of the pan, scraping up all the brown bits with a wooden spoon. Add the chicken stock, rosemary, sun-dried tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon salt, and 2 teaspoons pepper. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables in the Dutch oven and bring to a simmer over medium heat on top of the stove. Cover the pot and place it in the oven to bake it for about 2 hours, until the meat and vegetables are all tender, stirring once during cooking. If the stew is boiling rather than simmering, lower the heat to 250 or 275 degrees F.

Before serving, stir in the frozen peas, season to taste, and serve hot.

A Show I can Really Sink My Teeth Into...

Oh thank heavens its Wednesday! Two days down, two to go – yahoo! Work is tedious this week, alternating between supercrazy and just mildly chaotic. Starting to feel the effects of our delightful economic state this week….they’re starting to cut production hours and our warehouse is packed to the rafters due to lack of buyers. Our market has pretty much tanked. Fall is normally kind of a crapshoot anyway – some years have been REEEAAALLY bad and we’ve only worked 3 or 4 days during the week or seriously reduced hours for a 5-day week, while other years have been good enough that we actually worked Saturdays. And frankly, this is probably the biggest reason I am going back to school…market instability is a bad thing for an hourly employee at any time, but especially heading into the holidays. That and the Brazilians are just driving me nuts with their micromanaging!!! Those people have some serious control issues.

I’ve been watching a new series on HBO this fall, called “True Blood”. Been waiting for them to come up with a good series since “Deadwood” and “Carnivale” wrapped up. This is not a very family-friendly show by any stretch of the imagination, but I’ve been liking the storyline lots. It’s a vampire show, set in modern time in a small Louisiana town. The main character is a mind-reading waitress named Sookie Stackhouse. The country is buzzing over “vampire rights” as they have apparently come out of the closet…or the coffin (ha ha). And as you can imagine, most folks aren’t real keen on the idea of vampires among us. Sookie becomes involved (mostly in a platonic way) with a vampire named Bill. The writers so far have done a good job of developing the characters; the story is full of twists and turns, ending each episode in a way that you have to watch the next one (which is kind of the point of a series, right?). Last episode we got to learn more about Bill and his life in Civil War-era Louisiana before he was “turned”. If you read Ann Rice’s vampire chronicles and enjoyed them, this may be a show for you. It airs on HBO on Sunday nights. Oddly enough I am reading the first book of the insanely popular “Twilight” series. Bit more tame than “True Blood” :0

October!!

Here we are in October. I love October for the simple reason that Halloween is my all-time fav holiday! Bring on the skeletons, the jack-o-lanterns, zombies, witches and mummies! I can’t wait to pop big bowls of popcorn and settle into nights of classic horror movies on AMC or TCM – you know, the really good cheesy monster movies like “Dracula” starring Bela Legosi, “The Invisible Man” , and “Frankenstein” with Lon Chaney Jr.; and “Psycho” (I still can’t shower without peeking out from the curtain to make sure Norman Bates isn’t waiting by the sink to get me!) is a staple of classic horror movies. Of course I have to pop in my dvd of “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”…LOVE that one :0) I dress up most years; last year I came to work in a big flannel nighshirt (I had shorts on underneath), socks and slippers, curlers in my hair and a mud mask on my face. I got some interesting looks in that get up for sure ;0) I thought my boss was going to hurt something laughing that hard (LOL). I’m kicking around going as a zombie this year…I have a place to get the “white eyes” contact lenses so my eyes would be totally blank…then just put really pale make-up on…I could wear my everyday clothes…quick and simple costume. Or maybe a vampire…I could get some red or some snake-eye contacts and some little teeth, use the pale make-up and dress in regular clothes. We’ll see. Got a few weeks yet to make up my mind. Let the “ghoul”-d times roll :0)

Ever have one of those days!?! It's bananas here at work today...I think if I looked in a mirror, I'd look just like this! (LOL)

Dirty Dancing in the Morning

I had one of those Twilight Zone moments this morning. I woke up with “Time of My Life” from the Dirty Dancing movie stuck in my head for whatever reason…couldn’t begin to guess why…I haven’t seen the movie in quite a while…didn’t hear the song anywhere…just popped into my cranium. Been humming it all morning. I get to work, go to the main offices to get our “mail” and it is playing on the dang radio!! Seriously!! I kid you not. Most definitely one of those things that make you go ‘hmmm’.

Another oddity occurred earlier in the week – I got word from my “crash crew” buddy and good friend, Darla, that they’ve got a site up for the SHS Class of ’89 20-year reunion. 20 years. Good Lord…can it really have been that long already!?! I’m not old enough for that yet!! Okay, so I have some grey hairs…I’ve had those SINCE HS (I blame Algebra class for that)...I'm still young!...a 20-year reunion would mean I'm almost...40 ((gasp!!)) I peeked in on the class of ‘88’s site over the summer and was enjoying seeing where people ended up at, what they were doing, and of course how much/little they changed. I have done the same for my own class with the few “classmate profiles” that are posted thus far. Some people I wouldn’t know if they ran me over with a cement truck. Others look pretty much the same, just a little older. I will confess to being petty enough that it makes me smile to see some of the “beautiful people” I went to school with sporting lotsa extra pounds and some wrinkles…I’d hate to be the only one ;0) Yeah, I know, ”if you can’t say anything nice....” yadda yadda yadda. Sue me.

Have NOTHING really planned for the weekend – I don’t have to work (yay!), no fundraisers going on, nada. Possibility of a visit by my DH’s friend Lynn and his kids tomorrow, but we’ll see. If it’s not raining (much) I think I’ll head out with the camera and get some pics.

Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see you back here again later!!!!

S-m-i-l-e

Welcome to Wednesday everyone!! Wishing you all a superb day :0)

Feeling pretty good today…. and not just “good” good, we’re talking “zipadee-do-dah-I-love-my-life-all-is-right-with-the-world” kind of good. I have been riding a bit of a high since Saturday - I had so much fun! (I think I mentioned that already) - and am holding on for dear life to the splendid mood I’m in. Had a blip of icky here and there but managed to shake it. I think the yummy pizza Monday night helped :0) Bad bad bad for the figure, but ohhhh so good going down ((LOL)) I’m doing penance for that, though…crunches and a bunch of “sumo squats” on top of the running and stuff…ouch. I’m such a wimp ;0) Anyway, it’s all good in my world and I am loving life. I am blessed in so many ways; I just need to remember that when things start to look bleak. I am ever so thankful for my wonderful family and awesome friends! You all are my biggest blessing!! Without all of you, my life would be circling the drain. So here’s to you…salut!!!!

Busy Weekend

Busy weekend! Lots going on, mostly on Saturday. My DH and his band played a gig (private birthday party) in Blackfoot; I worked ½ day, the kiddo had a fundraiser for the swim team, after which he and I drove north where he spent the night with his grandpa for a “bachelor night”… you know…..cigarettes, whiskey and wild women - ha ha ha ;0) I drove on up to IF where I picked up my BF and her girls, then ventured on up to Fall Creek, Swan Valley and Palisades with our cameras to snap pics of the gorgeous autumn colors. So pretty!! A friend and co-worker of mine was running his thoroughbred in the races at Sandy Downs over the weekend, along with his brother the jockey/trainer who had 10 of his running over a 2-day period…one of which was in the Bosun race with a purse of $55,000. ((That’s a lot of hay, y’all.)) Tried to catch them at the track but by the time we got back in town it was past 9, they were done running races for the day. Bummer. We dropped the girls off at home, fed them, then headed to Karens where my BF’s hubby was shooting some pool with friends. We ended up shooting some pool as well, which we used to do a lot of once upon a time. Actually were pretty good. Now, not so much. We stink :0) I think it took us 10, 15 minutes of chasing the damn 8-ball all over the table before either of us sunk it the first game. I’m thinking neither of us should quit our day jobs to become pro pool players (LOL). The band was great (they were friends of ours, a pleasant surprise!) so Aundria and I had to get out there and boogie to a few tunes before we called it a night (11:00 was waaaaay past my bed time!). Oodles of fun, went too fast, as the good times usually do. Met up with hubby, son, DIL, oldest daughter and SIL in Poky for brunch at noon on Sunday. I was hoping to get to visit my MIL Sunday but was surprised by the brunch plan so that will have to be another trip. Weekends definitely need to be longer. There’s just never enough time to see everyone and do everything in 24 hours.

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are enjoying the great fall weather. Have a great day!!!

Babe's House

The sun has set on the “house that Babe built”. One of the last of the old grand ballparks saw its last game on Sunday. The first game was played April 18, 1923 against the rival Boston Red Sox. This Bronx icon has seen baseball legends like Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Lou Gerhig, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio and of course the Sultan of Swat, the great Babe Ruth. As demolition begins and Yankee Stadium is sold off brick by brick, fans everywhere pause to mourn the end of an era. A lifelong Yankee fan, I will forever regret not having the opportunity to visit Yankee Stadium. Here’s to the grand ol' House of Ruth and thanks for the memories.
